MARINE CARGO INSURANCE

Cover for cargo on the move.

We help South African importers, exporters and businesses arrange marine cargo insurance around the goods they move, the routes they use and their responsibilities along the way.

CARGO COVER SHOULD FOLLOW THE JOURNEY

A shipment may travel by road, sea, air or rail, with several handovers before it reaches its destination. Marine cargo insurance can be arranged for these journeys, including imports and exports. The cover needs to reflect the goods, their value, the route and the point at which your business takes responsibility for them.

Inscorp helps you review the journey and your trading terms before recommending cover. We clarify where the proposed insurance starts and ends, which transit or storage stages are included, and the terms, limits and exclusions that apply.

WHO WE ASSIST

We assist South African businesses whose goods move between suppliers, premises and customers, including:

• Importers and exporters
• Manufacturers moving raw materials or finished products
• Wholesalers, distributors and retailers
• Businesses importing machinery or specialist equipment
• Businesses with occasional shipments or regular cargo movements

We help you review your responsibility for the goods and the insurance needed along their journey, whether you arrange the transport yourself or use a freight forwarder.

WHAT WE REVIEW BEFORE ARRANGING COVER

Before arranging marine cargo insurance, we look at what you ship, how it travels and when your business becomes responsible for it. These six areas help us understand the journey and discuss suitable cover with the insurer.

GOODS AND SHIPMENT VALUES

We review what you ship, how it is packed and the highest value travelling on one shipment. We also discuss how the insured value is calculated and identify goods or handling requirements that need specific agreement with the insurer.

TRADING TERMS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

We review your purchase and sale terms, including any agreed Incoterms, to understand when your business carries the risk of loss or damage to the goods. This helps us discuss where your cargo cover should start and end, and whether insurance arranged by another party needs further review.

ROUTES AND TRANSPORT METHODS

We look at the countries your goods travel through and the road, sea, air or rail stages involved. We also review collections, deliveries and changes between carriers so the proposed insurance can be considered against the full journey.

STOCK THROUGHPUT INSURANCE

Your stock may move through several transport and storage stages before reaching customers. Stock throughput insurance can combine cover for these stages, including handling, under one policy. We review your goods, stock movements, storage locations and maximum values with the insurer to agree suitable cover, subject to the policy’s terms, limits and exclusions.

POLICY TERMS AND CONDITIONS

We explain the proposed cover, its limits, excesses and exclusions, and any packing, security or shipment declaration requirements. We also discuss whether cover for individual shipments or an annual arrangement better suits how often your business moves goods.

DOCUMENTS AND CLAIMS PROCEDURES

We discuss the records to retain, including invoices, packing lists, transport documents and delivery receipts. We also explain the policy’s notification requirements and the steps to take if goods arrive damaged or short, including recording the loss and preserving recovery rights against the carrier.

KEEP COVER IN STEP WITH YOUR SHIPMENTS

A different supplier, a higher-value shipment or a new destination may change your insurance needs. Let your broker know before these changes take effect so the arrangements can be reviewed with the insurer.

Speak to us when you:

• Start shipping different goods or specialist equipment
• Increase the value of individual shipments
• Add new countries, routes or transport methods
• Change your purchase or sale terms, including Incoterms
• Introduce longer storage periods or new storage locations
• Change your packing methods or handling arrangements

Check the insurance arrangements before goods begin their journey. Any changes to cover need to be agreed with the insurer.
